Sustainability & Conservation

At Via Natura, sustainability is at the heart of how we operate in the Galápagos. As cruise operators in one of the world’s most fragile and pristine ecosystems, we recognize our responsibility to protect the environment while supporting the communities that call the islands home.

Through HERMES, our approach to sustainability goes beyond wildlife conservation. We believe in connecting our guests with the people, culture and landscapes of the Galápagos, while contributing to the long-term wellbeing of the islands and their communities.

Reducing Food Waste
HERMES offers served-dish gastronomic experiences rather than buffet-style meals, helping reduce food waste by approximately 30%. This approach allows us to provide a more refined dining experience while reducing the environmental impact of our operations.

Water Treatment
HERMES is equipped with water treatment systems that process black and grey water before discharge, in accordance with applicable international maritime standards. This helps minimize our impact on the surrounding marine environment.

Supporting Local Communities
Via Natura has sourced the majority of its food supplies from local businesses and communities for more than 18 years, supporting the local economy and its development. HERMES continues this commitment by working with local suppliers and naturalist guides.

Guests can also visit locally owned coffee farms in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island, offering a closer look at the communities, traditions and agricultural heritage of the Galápagos.

Celebrating Ecuadorian Culture
The Galápagos are part of Ecuador, and HERMES offers guests opportunities to discover the country beyond its extraordinary wildlife. Our culinary experience brings together Ecuadorian and international influences, while onboard cooking experiences offer an engaging introduction to Ecuadorian gastronomy and culture.

Reducing Single-Use Plastic
HERMES is committed to reducing single-use plastic throughout the guest experience. Reusable water bottles are provided to guests at no additional cost, with water refill stations available aboard. Guests can keep their bottles and continue using them throughout their travels in Ecuador and beyond.

Thoughtfully Selected Amenities
HERMES prioritizes environmentally responsible amenities and seeks suppliers whose practices align with our sustainability commitments. Where possible, we use refillable dispensers and products designed to reduce unnecessary packaging and environmental impact.

Scalesia Reforestation Program
Via Natura is developing a dedicated Scalesia reforestation program in Puerto Ayora on nine hectares of privately owned land adjacent to Galápagos National Park territory. Every HERMES booking contributes to the development of this initiative.

Guests can visit the project and, where available, participate by planting their own tree. Scalesia is an endemic tree of the Galápagos and plays an important role in the highland ecosystem, providing shade, protecting soil from erosion and creating habitat for native species including Galápagos tortoises, Galápagos doves and Darwin’s finches.
